Psych Ward Stories: Why We Don't Need Drugs for Mental Illness

Psych Ward Stories: Why We Don't Need Drugs for Mental Illness

I was arrested, taken to the psych ward and forcefully held down and injected with pharmaceutical drugs.

After regaining consciousness, I was constantly being pressured by doctors–and even most of my friends and family–to take medication.

I stood strong. I made it out of the hospital without taking drugs and eventually found peace of mind naturally through Yoga and a healthy lifestyle.

So how did I end up in the psych ward? Well, at the time of my arrest I believed I was Jesus...Yes, I was that kind of crazy. But before we get there, let’s back up.

The week before blacking out in a hospital bed, I was living in Los Angeles and playing poker professionally. I was 23, playing in high-stakes card games with celebrities and trashing hotel rooms in Vegas.

Don't Confuse Self Love With Settling for an Overweight and Unhealthy Body

Of course it’s okay to be overweight, but should we really be okay with it?

I'm not okay with celebrating plus sized model campaigns in advertising as if by doing so we have made a major leap as a society.

We are all perfect as we are in this moment, but in my opinion we should not glorify being unhealthy.

We should applaud the people who realize they are overweight, love themselves for where they are at, and also decide to take directed action toward achieving a higher state of health. This is commendable because it is not easy to do.

WVP Ep 11: Tarot Cards, Yoga and Wisdom With Guest Ann Marie Paul

Ann Marie Paul is a tarot reader and Yoga teacher. Many people have a misconception about tarot cards, thinking that they are used to read the future. In reality this is not a common or effective use of the tarot.

A tarot reading is an opportunity for the individual to have their life placed under a microscope. Really, it's no different than any other kind of therapy. The tarot is a tool to get to the root the thoughts, emotions and situations coming up in a persons life.

Enjoy the interview :)

How To Move on With Your Life When Your Friends Aren't

How To Move on With Your Life When Your Friends Aren't

When we decide to make big changes to improve our life there will always be people who try to hold us back, and usually they won’t even realize they’re doing it.

From their perspective they don’t want to see us change because they feel like they might lose us. Most likely they will be completely unaware of the things they’re saying or doing which are actually serving to "hold us back".

Release Repetitive Thought Patterns Using These 4 Simple Steps

Release Repetitive Thought Patterns Using These 4 Simple Steps

I struggled with anxiety and depression for 10 years of my life. I was awkward, shy, and I couldn’t look people in the eye.

Along my journey of overcoming the pesky affliction of ‘background sadness’ as it could be described, I uncovered many interesting things about the inner workings of my mind.

Repetitive thoughts can be incredibly annoying, and depending on their nature, they can be downright tormenting.

We can easily become distracted by these thoughts and miss the thoughts, experiences or emotions, which actually triggered these repetitive thoughts in the first place.

How to Improve Mental Health by Releasing Shame Surrounding Dark Thoughts

How to Improve Mental Health by Releasing Shame Surrounding Dark Thoughts

Dark fantasies–even thoughts surrounding one's own death–are a normal human experience.

I personally struggled with depression for over 10 years of life and am very familiar with these types of thoughts.

In my experience, there’s actually nothing wrong with having them as long as a certain line does not get crossed.

They are just thoughts, not to be indulged in per say, but to be allowed to pass through the mind with acceptance.

By trying to suppress them, or even lying to ourselves about having them, we give them more strength, and worse, we create feelings of shame within ourselves.

Shady Olive oil Companies Exposed: Are you Using Rancid oil?

Shady Olive oil Companies Exposed: Are you Using Rancid oil?

Many people are not aware of the shady practices that are rampant in the olive oil industry.

This might sound a little silly, so let me explain.

Think about cocaine dealers on the street who cut their product with other white powders like baking soda to boost their profit margins.

The same thing happens with olive oil.

There is a major lack of rigorous testing on olive oil and the claims companies make about their products can be totally untrue.

Many companies ‘cut’ their olive oil by adding cheaper quality oils such as soybean oil, and consumers usually never know the difference.

Epigenetics: Understanding That We're not Victims of our Genes

Epigenetics: Understanding That We're not Victims of our Genes

There is a major myth in our society that genes control our biology and this is complete nonsense.

Sure, genes may predispose us to developing certain conditions or having certain traits, but they don’t control our fate.

In fact, the science of genetics is old news and the new science is called epigenetics.

Epigenetics studies how the environment of the cell dictates how the cell behaves, or in other words, which genes are being expressed.

Hurray, we’re no longer victims of our genes!

Once we understand this simple concept, we become empowered to change our environment if we want to change our biology.

Looking to Lose Weight? Skip the gym and eat Butter Instead. (Seriously)

Looking to Lose Weight? Skip the gym and eat Butter Instead. (Seriously)

Weight loss is primarily a function of metabolism and has almost nothing to do with exercise.

Of course, exercising has major health benefits and everyone should be moving their body every day as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The point of this post is to explain why doing a bunch of exercise without shifting the diet to optimize for fat metabolism, is going to be a big waste of time.

The Classic Theory on Weight Loss Completely Ignores our Hormones.

The classic theory for losing weight is based on a simple formula. We’ve been told that if we want to lose weight then we have to eat less calories and burn more calories.

This makes sense at first glance, but this over simplified model completely ignores the sources of those calories and their metabolic effects.

This Condition Affects Over 50 Million Americans: Here’s How to Prevent it and Heal Naturally

There are a lot of different labels that are used when our bodies are not properly functioning, and one of those labels is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

IBS isn’t really a disease–although it can definitely turn into one–and would more accurately be described as symptoms of a greater problem.

This is not to say that people are not suffering from it and conservative estimates report that over 50 million Americans may be afflicted with IBS.

How to Optimize Your Metabolism and Become a Fat-Burning Machine

How to Optimize Your Metabolism and Become a Fat-Burning Machine

A major reason that so many of us struggle to maintain a healthy weight, have sustainable energy throughout the day and feel our best, is that our bodies have become sugar-burning machines instead of fat-burning machines.

There is a colossal myth floating around that our bodies require carbohydrates and sugars–both converted to glucose once inside the body–for energy.

From a biological perspective, the body's requirement for dietary derived glucose–which is in fact only needed by the brain–is absolutely zero because our livers can actually manufacture glucose.

The body is able to gain all of the energy that it needs by metabolizing fats–and to a lesser extent proteins–into energy.
